{"id":1126,"date":"2019-09-24T10:26:25","date_gmt":"2019-09-24T09:26:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.gursewingmachines.com\/blog\/?p=1126"},"modified":"2020-02-26T12:03:04","modified_gmt":"2020-02-26T12:03:04","slug":"sewing-machine-presser-feet-what-theyre-for-and-how-to-use-them","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.gursewingmachines.com\/blog\/sewing-machine-presser-feet-what-theyre-for-and-how-to-use-them\/","title":{"rendered":"Sewing machine presser feet &#8211; what they&#8217;re for and how to use them"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Sewing machine presser feet &#8211; why are they important and how can they make your life easier?<\/h2>\n<p><strong>We\u2019re often asked about the difficulty some of our sewists experience when undertaking specific fiddly tasks with their sewing machines. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It leads to frustration, the end results can be disappointing and &#8211; <em>horror of horrors<\/em> &#8211; sewing doesn\u2019t seem to be so much fun any more\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes there is a quick, easy and inexpensive solution: cue choirs of heavenly angels and champagne corks popping!<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s our mission to make sewing fun for everyone &#8211; so here are a number of wonderful little helpers that all come under the title of <em>\u201csewing machine feet\u201d<\/em> or <em>\u201cpresser feet\u201d<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>So sit back, relax and rekindle your love of sewing &#8211; thanks to these marvellous little gadgets!<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Let\u2019s start at the very beginning as Mary Poppins once supposedly said, with an all round introduction to some of the most widely used feet.<\/p>\n<h3>Sewing machine presser feet<\/h3>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.madetosew.com\/sewing-machine-presser-feet-guide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Made to Sew blog<\/a> is our first port of call because it introduces you to a whole heap of goodies!<\/p>\n<p>Many of these may come with your sewing machine &#8211; and if they don\u2019t you can always source them at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gursewingmachines.com\/sewing-spares-accessories\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">our online shop<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>You can find out about the buttonhole foot, the zipper foot (both self-explanatory) the button foot, the non-stick glide foot and so on. The perfect place to start!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Look out for:<\/strong> the walking foot &#8211; there\u2019s even a separate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=9puSn_Ht11E&amp;feature=youtu.be\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">video<\/a> for this one.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Presser foot tutorials<\/h3>\n<p>If you prefer video how-tos and explanations, we\u2019ve got a whole raft of them here for you &#8211; in the shape of Babs Rudlin\u2019s group of excellent .<\/p>\n<p>All sorts of goodies from how to use a fringe foot, cording foot and how to blind hem trousers.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Look out for:<\/strong> How to use a fringe foot with bloopers at the end (it&#8217;ll make sense when you read it lol).<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Using the right presser foot makes sewing easier, faster, more professional<\/h3>\n<p>Assembled by editor Liz Johnson, this excellent <a href=\"https:\/\/sew4home.com\/tips-resources\/buying-guide\/using-right-presser-foot-makes-sewing-easier-faster-more-professional\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sew 4 Home piece<\/a> focuses on a few of the more interesting options available to sewists.<\/p>\n<p>We particularly like the gentle approach of this how-to and after a good general introduction with the more basic options, starts to get really interesting with some more specialised sewing feet.<\/p>\n<p>Little gems like the quarter inch seam foot &#8211; an essential for quilters &#8211; and it\u2019s brilliant at edgestitching and topstitching.<\/p>\n<p><strong>We absolutely love:<\/strong> The border guide foot.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cIf you want to sew perfectly parallel rows of stitches for a decorative effect, you&#8217;d normally have to get out your ruler and fabric pencils. But the Border Guide Foot lets you do it with virtually no measuring or marking.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>How to use a rolled hem foot<\/h3>\n<p>We\u2019ve picked this little gem out on the grounds that it can assist greatly with narrow rolled hems which can be a challenge for seams on lightweight fabrics.<\/p>\n<p>Santa\u2019s little helper in this particular case is the wonderful \u201chemmer foot\u201d and there\u2019s a wonderful how-to on the <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.treasurie.com\/rolled-hem-foot-tutorial\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Treasurie blog<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Most important bit:<\/strong> <em>\u201cAfter your 4 stitches, stop with the needle down in the fabric.
