How quickly things change! It was only a couple of weeks ago that we were planning our Easter sewing projects, meeting with friends and enjoying the lighter days and (hopefully) warmer weather.<\/b><\/p>\n
Now many of us are stuck at home: having to self-isolate and protect against illness.<\/p>\n
Every cloud has a silver lining and being home alone with your trusty sewing machine doesn’t necessarily have to be the worst thing in the world. So we’ve come up with three lovely projects to get you up and running – and banish the stuck at home blues!<\/p>\n
Damjana on the Apple Green Cottage website<\/a> reckons that “This is probably the hem you\u2019ll be using the most”<\/em>, and we’re inclined to agree. The double hem is used all the time by sewers – and it involves at lot of double measuring.<\/p>\n We rather like this “easy way” alternative.<\/p>\n Top tip:<\/em><\/strong> “Press and topstitch using a seam allowance just a bit smaller than the fold, to catch the fold underneath.\u00a0In my case, I simply sewed 3\/8\u2033 (1cm).\u00a0 Backstitch at the beginning and end of the seam to reinforce it.”<\/em><\/p>\n This is one of our current faves and it comes courtesy of the impressive Sew Modern Bags website<\/a>. It features a particularly useful roll over top so you can pack more or less into it as required.<\/p>\n Even better, it’s quite a straightforward project, even if you’re never tackled bag sewing before.<\/p>\n We love:<\/strong> “It\u2019s a large bag with a lot of features”.<\/em><\/p>\n One of the best ways to shorten jeans? This may well be – and it’s an excellent how-to from Jayne and Sonja on the Sustain My Craft Habit website<\/a>.<\/p>\n Using this method you get to keep the contrasting thread colour from the original hem.<\/p>\n Top tip:<\/strong> “By keeping the original hem, you preserve the look of the denim with all it\u2019s unique distressed and washed out features.”<\/em><\/p>\n Enjoy your sewing projects – and show us how well you’ve got on on our Facebook page<\/a>.
