It&#8217;s worth keeping pins well clear of this blade, since a pin striking it can blunt or even break it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-pale-cyan-blue-color has-text-color has-link-color has-medium-font-size wp-elements-3 wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>2, 3, 4 and 5-Thread Overlocking Explained<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is one of the most confusing parts of buying an overlocker, so it&#8217;s worth understanding properly before comparing machines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A 2-thread stitch is the lightest of the group, suited to seaming sheer and delicate fabrics, and it also produces a fine 2-thread rolled hem for sheers. It&#8217;s not a general-purpose seaming stitch, but nothing else matches it for minimal bulk on very lightweight fabric.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A 3-thread stitch is the most versatile everyday option, suited to seaming medium-weight fabrics on both knits and wovens. A 3-thread machine can also produce a rolled hem, stronger but slightly bulkier than the 2-thread version, plus specialty stitches like flatlock, which creates a flat, reversible seam popular in sportswear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A 4-thread stitch is bulkier and more stable again, comparable in strength to a safety stitch, and it&#8217;s the stitch most general-purpose overlockers default to. It copes well with heavier fabrics and super-stretch knits, which is why it&#8217;s the workhorse setting for most dressmaking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A 5-thread stitch only appears on combination machines, since it&#8217;s really a 4-thread overlock stitch and a separate 2-thread coverstitch chainstitch running at the same time. It produces the widest, most secure seam of the group and adds true coverstitch capability, the two parallel rows of stitching you&#8217;ll recognise from the hem of a bought T-shirt, without needing a second machine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most general-purpose overlockers offer 2, 3 and\/or 4-thread capability, and that combination covers the vast majority of dressmaking. The main decision is simply whether you want the finer 2-thread rolled hem option as well, or whether 3 and 4-thread capability alone will cover what you sew.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-pale-cyan-blue-color has-text-color has-link-color has-medium-font-size wp-elements-4 wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Rolled Hems: 2-Thread vs 3-Thread<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A rolled hem creates a narrow, tightly wrapped decorative finish and is particularly useful on lightweight fabrics. It&#8217;s ideal for scarves, napkins, lightweight dresses, children&#8217;s clothing and decorative edges generally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If a machine offers 2-thread capability, its rolled hem will be finer and less bulky, the better choice for genuinely delicate or sheer fabric. A 3-thread rolled hem is stronger but slightly bulkier, a better fit where the fabric needs a bit more durability than the finest hem can provide. A 3\/4-thread-only machine can usually still produce a 3-thread rolled hem by adjusting tension and stitch width, just not the finer 2-thread version.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-pale-cyan-blue-color has-text-color has-link-color has-medium-font-size wp-elements-5 wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Differential Feed<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is one feature we&#8217;d strongly recommend prioritising.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An overlocker has two sets of feed dogs, front and back, rather than the single set on a conventional sewing machine. Differential feed controls the rate at which the front feed dog moves relative to the back one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At a setting of 1.0, both feed dogs move fabric at the same rate, a balanced feed suited to most woven fabrics. Set above 1.0, the front feed dog pushes fabric through faster than the back pulls it away, which stops stretchy fabric from stretching out of shape or producing wavy, rippled seams as it&#8217;s sewn, particularly useful on knits and jersey. Pushed further still, a high differential feed setting can be used deliberately to create gathers. Set below 1.0, the back feed dog pulls more than the front pushes, deliberately stretching the fabric as it sews, which combined with a rolled hem produces a decorative &#8220;lettuce edge&#8221; effect on stretch fabric.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you regularly sew stretch or jersey fabric, differential feed genuinely changes how usable the finished seam is, so it&#8217;s worth checking a machine has it before buying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-pale-cyan-blue-color has-text-color has-link-color has-medium-font-size wp-elements-6 wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Threading and Tension<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is the feature beginners tend to worry about most.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gursewingmachines.com\/shop\/overlockers\">Overlockers<\/a> use several threads simultaneously, so threading is naturally more involved than threading a conventional sewing machine. Colour-coded threading guides, moulded into the machine body with one colour per thread path, make the process considerably easier and are standard on most current machines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tension is adjusted separately for each thread, so a 4-thread machine has four individual tension dials. Small, incremental adjustments matter more than big ones, turn one dial at a time and test-sew after each change. A correctly balanced stitch has the needle threads lying straight with minimal thread visible on the back of the fabric, and the looper threads interlocking neatly right at the fabric edge rather than pulling over onto the top or bottom. Once the right settings are found for a particular fabric, many sewists mark the dial positions, a dab of nail varnish is a popular method, so they can return to them quickly next time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the premium end of the market, you&#8217;ll also find air-threading overlockers, which use air pressure to blow thread through the looper&#8217;s threading path automatically, removing most of the manual threading process for the trickiest part of the machine. It&#8217;s worth knowing upfront that Novum is an exclusive own-brand range, which is why you won&#8217;t see it turning up in general sewing magazine roundups the way Brother or Janome do. That said, it isn&#8217;t obscure or untested: Novum machines are built around a metal internal chassis rather than a plastic one, and the general consensus among people who&#8217;ve actually used them, including in our own reviews, is solid construction and reliable stitch quality at a price that undercuts the equivalent Brother or Janome by a reasonable margin. All three current Novum models share a colour-coded threading system and easy lay-in tensions, and in our experience they&#8217;re among the easiest overlockers in the whole range to thread, right alongside the Stitchmaster S100D. The Novum N1034D gives you 2, 3 and 4-thread capability at an entry-level price, ideal if you&#8217;ve recently started dressmaking and want to move beyond finishing seams with a zigzag or overcasting stitch on your sewing machine. Step up slightly to the Novum Easylock 960D and you get the same 2, 3 and 4-thread flexibility with a noticeably more generous accessory package, a sensible upgrade if you already know you&#8217;ll be using an overlocker regularly. The Brother 2104D is a 3 and 4-thread overlocker with colour-coded threading and Brother&#8217;s F.A.S.T. lower looper threading system, and it comes with a piping foot, gathering foot, blind hem foot and an instructional DVD, a reassuring, well-established choice if you&#8217;re nervous about making the jump from a conventional sewing machine. The Brother 3034DWT is also 3 and 4-thread with the same colour-coded threading, but adds a free bag, table and waste tray to the package alongside piping, gathering and blind hem feet, useful if you want a more complete setup from the start. Step up to the Brother 4234D and you gain 2-thread capability as well, plus a trim trap and blind stitch foot, again with colour-coded threading throughout. The Janome 9300DX is a straightforward 3 and 4-thread overlocker designed for everyday garment construction and seam finishing, with colour-coded threading guides, an automatic thread tension release when you lift the presser foot, and a quick lever-operated rolled hem conversion, plus a free gathering attachment included, but it isn&#8217;t the easiest machine in our range to thread. Moving up the range, the Janome My Lock ML454D is also 3 and 4-thread, with colour-coded thread guides, a slide-in pre-tension system and an auto looper threader that simplifies the lower looper specifically, worth considering once you&#8217;re making garments regularly rather than occasionally. The Janome My Lock ML654D adds 2-thread capability on top, along with its own colour-coded threading guide and a self-threading lower looper, bringing the finer 2-thread rolled hem into reach for anyone wanting greater stitch flexibility.
